AISI 416 - EN 1.4005 features a machinability rate of 85% that of a free-machining carbon steel — the highest of any stainless steel — thanks to sulfur added to the composition. Unfortunately, this sulfur decreases its corrosion resistance, weldability, and formability to levels below those of Grade 410.

Essential details
Corrosion resistance of AISI 416 is lower than the common austenitic grades. Useful resistance to dry atmospheres, fresh water and mild alkalies and acids, but less resistant than the equivalent non-free-machining grades. Less corrosion resistant than the austenitic grades and also less than 17% chromium ferritic alloys such as Grade 430. High sulphur content free machining grades such as 416 are totally unsuitable for marine or other chloride exposure.
Typical Applications:
- Valves, pump shafts and motor shafts
- Parts of washing machines
- Gears, bolts, nuts and studs
- Automatic screw-machined components
